Show and improve your skills

"For the industry, photonics engineers can make the quantum leap. Shaping the photonic industrial revolution starts with the right education."

Jan Watté

Group leader R&D Optics Advanced Engineering at Commscope

A major concern to many students, and also one of the most frequently asked questions is: “How can I show proof of my skills, talents and motivation without any job experience ?”.

The Master of Science in Photonics Engineering has a strong tradition in offering high-level internships in collaboration with leading companies and research institutes worldwide within the photonics domain, both in Belgium and wordwide. Student can get their first on-the-job experience and improve both their technical/application/desiging/modelling skills and their 21st century soft skills under the guidance of company supervisors/lab technician/ R&D engineers/developers/etc. and thus gain their first ‘workfloor’-experience.

The programme offers 2 internships:

  • Internship in Photonics, 10 ECTS (in Belgium or abroad, duration min. 10 weeks)
  • Internship on Photonics, 5 ECTS (in Belgium or abroad, duration min. 5 weeks)

As an intern, students become part of a professional team that develops the future of photonics. You can discover how real-life projects progress, how a initial idea turns into reality and help design innovative products that make a difference to the world. And where you can also make the difference.

The internships involve different aspects from a job which allows you to develop project planning and presentation competences next to engineering skills.
